I was just thinking recently about how websites do user accounts. Some platforms use an email address or username, others give the user a separate ID. An ID might seem unnecessary at first but can make account management easier.

The unique ID is a shorthand way for the platform to identify a particular account. This can be useful if you have to contact customer service for an account problem. Sometimes, rather than going through the whole story from the beginning, you can just lookup the account by its assigned ID.

I also think it’s a good idea to keep account details somewhere safe. People tend to remember their password, but then forget their username or account number.
