How Do You Choose the Right HR Management System for Fast-Growing Teams?

Hi all,
We’re scaling our team rapidly and I’ve been tasked with evaluating HR Management Systems that can handle onboarding, leave tracking, payroll sync, performance reviews, and compliance tracking—ideally all in one interface.
From a technical standpoint, I’m looking into solutions that offer API access for integration with our accounting and project management tools, as well as modules for attendance and employee self-service.
Has anyone here implemented a modern HR Management Service recently—either open source or proprietary? What features proved essential? Also, were there any limitations or hidden technical challenges you encountered post-deployment?
Would love to hear your recommendations and experience. Bonus if the system supports role-based access control and detailed reporting.
