Is building an HFT trading bot worth it for fintech startups?

Lately I've noticed more fintech founders pouring money into high-frequency trading bots early on, and I'm torn on whether it's a smart move or just an expensive distraction.
Sure, faster trade execution and tighter spreads sound great on paper. But the real costs of colocation fees, data feeds, compliance headaches, and finding engineers who actually understand this stuff add up fast for a young company still finding its footing.
Has anyone here actually gone through this? Did it pay off, or did it eat your runway with little to show for it? Curious whether founders are better off building this in-house or just partnering with an established provider instead.
