What Is the Best Time of Day for a Desert Safari?

Short answer, it depends what you want from the trip. The desert at 7 AM and the desert at 7 PM are almost two different places. Different light, different heat, different activities. So here's how each time slot actually works, and who it suits.
1. Morning Safari Pickup is early, around 6 or 7 AM. The sand is still cool, the dunes are quiet, and you're back at the hotel before lunch. What you get is mostly dune bashing, sandboarding and a short camel ride, no dinner or shows. Usually cheaper too, somewhere near AED 100 to 150. Good for people with a packed schedule, or families who don't want the kids out late.
2. Afternoon Safari This is the one most visitors book, and there's a reason. The afternoon desert safari picks you up around 3 PM, takes you through the red dunes near Lahbab while the sun is going down, then drops you at camp for BBQ dinner, Tanoura, fire show, all of it. Back by 9 PM or so. Costs roughly AED 120 to 180 shared. Everything in one evening, that's the appeal.
3. Evening Safari Bit confusing because some companies use evening and afternoon for the same thing. The true evening option usually skips dune bashing. You arrive after sunset, eat, watch the shows, go home. Fine for older guests or anyone who doesn't want the bumpy ride.
4. Overnight Safari You do the afternoon program, then stay. Tents or sleeping under the sky, depends on the camp. Wake up for sunrise, which is worth the early alarm, breakfast, then back to the city. Prices jump though, often AED 300 plus per person.
Season matters as much as the hour. From October to April the weather is pleasant almost any time of day. In summer it's a different story, 45°C isn't unusual, so the morning trip gets hot fast and the afternoon desert safari only really cools down once the sun drops. Most people in June or July go for the later slots for that reason.
So which is best? For a first visit, the afternoon desert safari. You see the dunes in daylight, catch the sunset, and still get dinner and entertainment without losing your next morning. Morning if time is short, overnight if you want something different.
