Photos and videos don't really prepare you for the Burj Khalifa on New Year's Eve. The tower lights up from the bottom to the very top, colours run across the buildings around it, and a huge crowd that was chatting a minute ago suddenly goes quiet. Then midnight hits and the place erupts.
Since a lot of you ask us where to stand, here's how it works on the night, and which spots are worth your time.
Where to watch from
Dubai Fountain and Dubai Mall. This is the busiest place and also the most exciting. You're close enough to feel the bangs in your chest. But everyone knows it, so it fills up early, and I mean hours early. Turning up at 11pm and hoping for a small gap won't work.
Burj Park and the walkways around Burj Lake. You still get a great look at the tower, only with a bit more room around you. Some areas get closed off on the night, so check access before you leave.
Dubai Opera and Souk Al Bahar. These work well if you'd like to eat something, sit for a while, and still see the show without being pushed around. Plenty of people pick this side for exactly that reason.
Kite Beach and Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Farther away, quieter, and the skyline looks lovely across the water. You won't hear the crowd the way you do downtown, but you'll see the whole display without turning your head.

What the night feels like
The whole day builds up slowly. By the afternoon, Downtown starts filling with families, friends, and people carrying folding chairs. In the evening the roads around the tower crawl or shut, and the mood turns into something closer to a street festival than a countdown.
The fireworks themselves are short. A few minutes, honestly, and then they're gone. Take one quick photo if you must, then put your phone away. You'll remember the noise and the crowd counting down far more than any video.
What catches people out is the ending. Thousands of people leave at the same time, the metro queues stretch, and you'll wait. It's part of the night, so just plan for it and don't get annoyed.
Small things that help
Get there early. Really early. Take the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station instead of trying to drive in, and expect a long line going home. Wear shoes you can stand in all evening, and bring a thin jacket because it gets cool near the water. Keep your bag light. Phone signal can drop in big crowds, so agree on a meeting point with your group before you arrive. Timings and access rules change each year, so double-check close to the date. And if you're bringing a baby, think it through, since the noise and the crowd can be a lot.

Love crowds and energy? Go downtown. Want a proper dinner and a seat? Pick a cruise. Prefer space and quiet? A waterfront spot away from the tower will be better.
