How realistic is it to become a self-taught developer in SL?

I don't have much experience in the SL IT industry, but I have a feeling that companies tend to prefer candidates with degrees from state universities, or even reputed private institutes.
What are chances of bagging an internship without any certification and what sort of roadmap should I take?
Would appreciate some help from any hiring managers online or anyone who managed to break into the IT sector without a degree.
